Description: This map, which covers the east coast of Africa, Indian Ocean and Australia, was published in Paris in 1803 by Jean-Baptiste Poirson, a renowned French globemaker, engraver, and cartographer active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. From about 1790, maps began appearing under the Poirson imprint, including this detailed depiction of the east coast of Africa, the Indian Ocean, and Australia.nThis map records Captain Nicolas Baudins journey to South Australian waters undertaken during a voyage of discovery authorized by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800. In 1803, Baudin circumnavigated Kangaroo Island, which is labelled on the map as Île des Kanguroos.nThe map also highlights discoveries made by Captain James Cook along the east coast of Australia.
