Description: This engraved map (Hydrographic Description Relating to the Dutch Voyage to Java in the East Indies) charts the route of the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies (159597), led by Cornelis de Houtman. It was published in 1599 by Theodor de Bry as part of India Orientalisan ambitious compendium of travel narratives and maps documenting European exploration of Asia and Africa. The map draws heavily on an earlier chart (#69) produced in 1598 by Cornelis Claesz., which accompanied the Historie van Indien, the voyage journal written by Willem Lodewijcksz., a participant in the expedition. nDe Brys version preserves the main navigational details of the original, documenting both the exitus (outward voyage) and reditus (return voyage). The outbound route is depicted with two squadrons of four ships eachthe Mauritius, Amsterdam, Hollandia, and Duifje. The return is shown with two squadrons of three ships, reflecting the burning of the Amsterdam near Bawean Island to consolidate dwindling resources.nWhile retaining the geographical core of Claesz.s map, de Bry introduced several notable changes. He replaced the original top right corner vignettes with a Latin and German commentary on Terra Australis Incognita and removed Claesz.s German scale bar and two small inset maps. These revisions reflect de Brys editorial choices in adapting Dutch source material for a broader European audience.nThis captures a pivotal moment in the rise of Dutch maritime power. The voyage it records marked the beginning of direct Dutch trade with the East Indies and paved the way for the formation of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1602. It is both a historical document of exploration and a cartographic expression of expanding European interest in the East.
