Description: This miniature map of Australia, titled Nuova Olanda e Nuova Galles riconosciuta dal Cap.o Cook nel 1770 (New Holland and New South Wales as recognised by Captain Cook in 1770), appears in the Nuovo Atlante Generale, a rare pocket atlas published in Florence in 1779. Issued in the form of ninety-seven tarot-style cardsknown locally as the Minchiateeach card features a map in the upper half, a central title flanked by symbolic tarot figures, and a list of place names at the bottom. The atlas was compiled by Agostino da Rabatta and Giovanni de Baillou, with engravings by Aniello Lamberti.nCard number 94 contains what is believed to be the first depiction of the entire Australian continent following James Cooks 1770 voyage. Below the map is a list of place names keyed to letters on the imagemany of them locations named by Cook that could not be shown directly on the map due to its small scale. In addition to Cooks contributions, the map incorporates earlier Dutch discoveries, including those by Frederik de Houtman and Jacob dEdel in 1619 (Terra dEdel, near present-day Perth), Jan Carstensz. in 1623 (Gulf of Carpentaria), Pieter Nuyts in 1627, Frederick de Witt in 1628, and Abel Tasman in 164243 and 1644. William Dampiers 1699 exploration is also acknowledged with Baja de Cani Marini (todays Shark Bay).nDespite its historical value, this map is notably absent from Giovanni de Baillous biographies and standard reference works on Australian cartography. As Italian cartographic historian Vladimiro Valerio has observed, the Nuovo Atlante Generale remains an unusual and largely overlooked item in the early visual history of Australia.
