Description: This engraved gorethe third of four sheets designed to form a terrestrial globewas created by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a noted geographer, engraver, and publisher based in Rome. First issued in 1790 and reissued as part of the expanded Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale beginning in 1792, the globe reflects the latest geographic knowledge from the voyages of Captain James Cook alongside key Dutch discoveries in the southern hemisphere.nCovering the region from India to Nouva Olanda (modern-day Australia) and extending north to central Asia, the gore features locations along Australias eastern coastline Captain James Cook including Cape Howe, Cape Morton, and Stretto dEndeavour (Endeavour Strait). However, two of Cooks most significant landfallsBotany Bay and Endeavour Riverare notably omitted.nThe eastern coast is labelled Nouva Galles Meridionale (New South Wales), reflecting Cooks mapping of the region. Cassini also retains earlier Dutch toponyms, including:nT. di Nuyts named for Pieter Nuyts (1627)nT. de Leoni likely referencing Willem de Vlamingh (169697)nTerra de Wit for Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628)nTerra della Concordia commemorating Dirk Hartogs 1616 voyage aboard the EendrachtnThe gore also reflects the voyages of Abel Janszoon Tasman, with references to:nTerra di Dieman and Ta di Diemen (Tasmania)nI.S. Maria and I. Tasman both referring to Tasmanian coastal featuresnCassinis Globo terrestre represents a fusion of Enlightenment cartography and print craftsmanship. While celebrating Cooks contributions, it preserves the legacy of seventeenth-century Dutch explorationthough its omissions suggest that visual design and editorial judgement played a role alongside scientific representation.
