Description: John Arrowsmith was a renowned British cartographer and a key figure in nineteenth-century mapmaking. A nephew of the influential mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith, John was instrumental in advancing the precision and detail of geographic representation during his time. His work stood out for its incorporation of the latest discoveries, making his maps some of the most reliable of the era.nThis pair of maps of Australia records the extent of EWuropean settlement and the progress of inland exploration up to 1847. Known for their high level of accuracy and craftsmanship, the maps were periodically revised and reissued between 1838 and 1862, with each edition incorporating new geographic knowledge. nEach sheet has a distinct title: the left sheet features a large, general title referring to the entire continent, while the right sheet featrues a smaller, more specific heading. This design enabled the maps to be trimmed and joined at the 134th meridian east, where Arrowsmith marked a "joining line" on both sheetseach marked on opposite sides of the meridian. Surrounding the main map are three inset shoiwng Cape York, Van Diemens Land, and a world map, while notes throughout the sheets reference earlier Australian expeditions.nNotably, only the right-hand sheet includes updated inland information for South Australia, ensuring they would remain visible once the sheets were joined. The map also identifies 26 counties in Western Australia, numbered and listed in a key in the lower-left corner. The results of John Septimus Roes 18481849 expeditionscovering areas south and east of Perth, the southern coast as far as the Russell Range, and northward to latitude 3230'Swere added to this issue.nThis map is particularly notable for documenting substantial changes in southeastern Australia, reflecting the regions growing economic importance for agriculture and settlement.
