Description: In 1787, Alexander Kincaid published A New Geographical, Historical, and Commercial Grammar, an adaption of William Guthries book of the same title, first published in 1770. A second edition followed in 1788, and a third in 1790, which included fourteen additional maps, among them this one of New Holland (todays Australia). nThe map, though unsigned by its maker or engraver, is based on John Andrewss A New Chart of New Holland, issued in William Edens History of New Holland published in 1787. It outlines Australia with its southern coastline incomplete and Tasmania still connected to the mainland. An inset map features Port Jackson, derived from John Hunters 1788 chart, which was first published in Governor Arthur Phillips A Voyage to Botany Bay published in 1789. This inset emphasizes Port Jacksons growing importance as the site of the newly established British colony.nThe map also includes a fully detailed outline of New Zealand, reflecting the discoveries made by Captain James Cook just over a decade earlier. Additional features include a compass rose in the top-right corner and a cartouche at the lower-centre edge.
