Description: This edition, published in Lyon by Sebastian Gryphius, is titled The Commentaries on the Dream of Scipio and Saturnalia by Macrobius Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius, a Consular and Illustrious Man, revised and expanded from various ancient manuscripts (translated from Latin). It comprises two major works by the late Roman scholar Macrobius:n1. Somnium Scipionis (The Dream of Scipio): A commentary on a passage from Ciceros De re publica, in which Scipio Aemilianus dreams of his grandfather, Scipio Africanus. In the vision, Africanus imparts philosophical wisdom on the cosmos, virtue, and the souls immortality. Macrobius expands on these ideas with Neoplatonic interpretations, exploring the nature of the universe and the soul.n2. Saturnalia (The Saturnalia): A collection of dialogues set during the Roman festival of Saturnalia, covering diverse topics such as literature, philosophy, and religion. This work offers insight into the intellectual life of the time and preserves excerpts from earlier authors whose writings might have otherwise been lost.nA notable feature of this edition is the inclusion of a woodcut world map, which visually represents the cosmographical concepts discussed in Macrobius's commentary.
