Description: This trimmed engraving is part of a series of seven works representing the liberal arts, created by Cornelis Cort and published by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp in 1565. Cock's signature appears on the spine of the book in the lower left corner. The engravings were based on a series of now-lost paintings by Frans Floris, whose signature appears near a ruler at the lower right edge. These works were commissioned for the villa of Nicolaas Jongelinck, an Antwerp merchant and art collector, around 1557.nThe untrimmed Geometria engraving is titled Vestigare geometriae interualla locorum est, quamque alto, longa, et lata rerum corpora (To trace the Geometry of the intervals of places, and the high, long, and wide measurement of the form) and is numbered "6" at the lower right.nThe scene shows Geometry, crowned with a castle, using dividers to measure a globe centred on Florida, Central, and South America. Two male figures observe her, and the foreground is filled measuring tools and large books. A snake winds around the globe's base, and a toad rests against it. Scholarly books and instruments are scattered across the stone patio, setting a scholarly atmosphere.
