Description: This engraved world map was published in Frankfurt in 1599 as part of the titlepage for volume eight of Theodor de Brys India Occidentalis series, describing the voyages of Sir Francis Drake, John Hawkins, Thomas Cavendish, and Sir Walter Raleigh.nBetween 1590 and 1634, the de Bry firm issued twenty-five volumes collectively known as the Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam orientalem et Indiam occidentalem ("Collections of Voyages to the East and West Indies"). Thirteen volumes were devoted to accounts of exploration in the New World (America or India Occidentalis series), and twelve to Africa and Asia (India Orientalis series). Most volumes were published in both Latin and German and were often reprinted.nThe world map on the titlepage of Part 8 is a reduction of Jodocus Hondiuss circa 1595 broadside map depicting the route of Sir Francis Drakes circumnavigation. It features a portrait of Drake at the top centre and a depiction of his ship, the Golden Hind, below. Drakes route around the globe is clearly indicated, emphasising the achievements of English exploration at the close of the sixteenth century.nThe map itself reflects late sixteenth-century European geographic knowledge, combining relatively accurate depictions of known coasts with speculative cartographic features, such as a partially suggested Terra Australis and incomplete renderings of the northern polar regions.nA red collection stamp appears on the verso in the upper right corner, reading "Lázár Tibor gyűjteménye Budapest Hungary," indicating provenance from the collection of Tibor Lázár of Budapest.
