Description: Nicolaes Visscher II inherited the family business following his fathers death in 1679. In 1682, he had secured a government patent to print and publish maps, relocating the shop to the Dam while retaining its original sign, In de Visscher. Around 1683, began publishing the first edition of his Atlas minor, which featured an elaborate title page designed and engraved by Gerard de Lairesse. This design, bearing de Lairesses signature on a scroll to the right, remained in use not only throughout Visschers lifetime, but also in subsequent editions overseen by his widow, extending its legacy until at least 1716..nThe title page centers on a dramatic depiction of Atlas, supporting the celestial sphere against the backdrop of a towering pyramid. To the right, Neptune, the god of the sea, sits astride a terrestrial globe, gripping his trident. On the far left is Cybele, Mother Earth, wearing her turreted crown and holding a key, seated behind the Muse of History. At Cybeles feet lie instruments of measurementa cross-staff, measuring chain, and circumferentoralongside a resting lion, symbolizing Leo Hollandicus, a nod to the province of Holland where Amsterdam is located. Above it all, the angel of Fame soars triumphantly, brandishing twin trumpets to proclaim the importance and prestige of Visschers atlas.
