Description: This untitled mapcommonly referred to as Mar di Indiawas published in 1619 as part of America Occidentalis, Part 11, within Theodor de Brys monumental travel compendium Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam Occidentalem et Indiam Orientalem. De Bry, a German engraver and bookseller based in Frankfurt, began the project in 1590 to document European voyages to the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The Collectiones were divided into two principal series: India Occidentalis (13 volumes focused on the New World) and India Orientalis (12 volumes concerned with Africa and the East Indies), both issued in Latin and German and frequently reprinted. Together, the complete de Bry corpus comprises fifty-four parts.nThis map is one of three known de Bry maps to depict the East Indies in their entirety. Included in the eleventh part of India Occidentalis, it accompanied accounts of the Pacific and East Indian voyages of Dutch explorers Willem Cornelisz Schouten (161517) and Joris van Spilbergen (161417). Although titled America Occidentalis, this volume extended its scope to include Dutch circumnavigations and encounters across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, reflecting the growing global reach of European maritime enterprise.
