Petermann Australia Maps

Condition: Excellent

Description: Nine folding maps (18591871), bound as an atlas of Australian exploration from Petermann's Journal, along with a two-part folded map of Southern Australia stored in the back sleeve.nAugustus Heinrich Petermann was a distinguished 19th-century German cartographer, renowned for his detailed maps documenting various explorations, including those in Australia. In the 1840s, he studied and collaborated with leading German and English cartographers before founding his Geographical Journal in 1855, which continues to be published today. nThrough his association with the Royal Geographical Society in London and later as the first head of the Geographical Institute in Gotha, he maintained extensive correspondence with numerous explorers and travelers who provided the latest geographical information for the Journal. His connections from his R.G.S. days led to many Australian explorations being reported exclusively in his Journal (e.g., Lefroy 1864). nThe Petermann Ranges in western South Australia are named in his honor. Petermanns maps, known for their detailed topographical and hydrological features, contributed to updates in atlases such as Stieler Handatlas. In 1869, he championed German efforts to reach the North Pole, organizing two expeditions. All his maps were lithographs printed in colour.
