Description: John Arrowsmith was a distinguished British cartographer and a pivotal figure in nineteenth-century mapmaking. As the nephew of the influential mapmaker Aaron Arrowsmith, John continued the family tradition of producing highly detailed and accurate maps. He was particularly known for incorporating the latest geographic discoveries, which made his work some of the most reliable and respected of the era.nThis 1837 Map of the South East Portion of Australia by John Arrowsmith highlights the results of Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchells significant explorations in southeastern Australia during 1831, 1835, and 1836. As Surveyor General of the Colony of New South Wales, Mitchell played a key role in charting Australias interior and identifying regions suitable for settlement and agriculture (#49, #50, #179, #269), including the area he named Australia Felix (todays southwestern Victoria). In the top left is an inset map of Australia.nAccording to cartographic historian Ronald Vere Tooley, this 1837 map builds upon Arrowsmiths earlier Map of the Discoveries in Australia (1834), while incorporating updated tracks of explorers, including:n Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (18321836)n Hamilton Hume and William Hovell (1824) (tracks depicted in colour but unnamed)n Governor Sir Richard Bourke (1837)nKey features of the map include:n The naming and delineation of South Australias boundaries (proclaimed in 1836).n A detailed depiction of the Darling River, refined by successive expeditions, including Mitchells.n Extensive coverage of what is now Victoria, labelled Australia Felix, reflecting Mitchells enthusiastic assessment of the region during his 1836 journey
