Description: This rare eighteenth-century map of Australia (Nieu Holland) was published by Jan de Lat, one of the few booksellers outside Amsterdam to issue maps and atlases during the period. Active in Deventer between 1734 and 1750, de Lat worked in collaboration with the Almelo-based engraver Jacob Keizer. The map explicitly acknowledges its foundation in an earlier work by the prominent French cartographer Guillaume Delisle, yet incorporates additional Dutch nomenclature and interpretive features distinctive to de Lat's edition.nThe map foregrounds place names associated with early Dutch exploration, offering a concise cartographic summary of key European encounters with the Australian continent. Notable references include:n Dirk Hartog (1616): The first European known to land on tAustralia's western coast, naming it 't Landt van Eendracht (Land of Eendracht)n The Leeuwin (1622): A Dutch ship whose name was given to the southwestern cape of Australia, now known as Cape Leeuwinn Jan Carstensz and Willem Joosten van Colster (1623): Their northern explorations encompass Cape York and Arnhem Landn Pieter Nuyts (1627): Recognised for charting the southern coast aboard of Australia aboard the 't Gulden Zeepaert (Golden Seahorse).n Abel Tasman (1644): His second voyage is credited with the mapping of Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) and the Gulf of Carpentaria.n William Dampier: The English mariner whose later expeditions contributed to evolving European conceptions of the continent.nDe Lats map is notable for retaining and adapting several distinctive Dutch toponyms, many of which are rarely found on contemporary maps, including:n I. Rottnest (Rottnest Island) Trials Rossee (the Trial Islands) Shark Point A. Tasmans Bocht (Abel Tasmans Bay), an uncommon designation for the Gulf of Carpentaria.nAs both a synthesis of earlier French cartographic sources and a celebration of Dutch maritime legacy, this map stands as a provincial yet significant contribution to the visualisation of Australia in European cartography.
