Description: Sebastian Münster was a German mapmaker, cosmographer and professor of Hebrew at the University of Basel. Among his notable works was the Latin edition of Claudius Ptolemys Geography, first published in Basel in 1540. nFour years he produced Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder… (commonly known by its Latin title Cosmographia universalis), a more expansive and comprehensive work incorporating broader geographical, historical, and cultural content. Initially published in German in 1544, it was later translated into several languages, including Latin, French, Italian, and Czech, with editions produced between 1544 and 1578. The 1550 Cosmographia universalis, published in both Latin and German, represents the full realization of Münster's vision of a comprehensive geographic work. It included additional material and opened with a depiction of the creation of the world, titled Wie das erdtrich und das Meere erstlich von Gott beschaffen seind und in einander (How the Earth and the Seas Were Initially Created by God and Joined Together). nThis version is from the 1592 German edition of Cosmographia. The image serves as a visual interpretation of the Genesis creation story, illustrating God's separation of land and water and the formation of the Earth and seas. At the top of the map, God is depicted as a bearded figure surrounded by billowing clouds. To the left and right, the sun, moon, and stars are shown, flanked by angels in the corners. Beneath this heavenly realm lies a band of flames. At the bottom, scenes depict the third day of creation, including the separation of land and water, along with the Earth teeming with birds, animals, plants, and mountains. The seas are illustrated with an empty sailing vessel and sea monsters.
