Description: A view of Sydney Cove is closely based on the original engraving in the official publication of the Baudin voyage. It was created for the German edition of the Baudin account, Entdeckungsreise nach Australien, which was translated from French and published by Friedrich Justin Bertuch in Weimar between 1808 and 1819. The original French caption Vue dune partie de la Ville de Sydney, capitale des Colonies Anglaises aux Terres Australes, et de lentrée du Port Jackson dans lequel cette Ville est située (View of a part of the City of Sydney, capital of the English Colonies in the Southern Lands, and of the entrance to Port Jackson in which this City is situated), has been slightly modified to read: Ansicht von Sydney von der Südseite, und der Mündung des Parramatta-Flusses (View of Sydney from the south-side with the mouth of the Parramatta River). nThe foreground features the French encampment, with several sailors visible as they work on repairing their ships. To the left, a small group of Aboriginal people serves as a poignant reminder of the close proximity in which the French bivouacked with the local inhabitants.
