Description: Christoph Jamnitzer was a celebrated silversmith known for his remarkable contribution to ornamental design through his book, Neuw Grotteßken Buch (New Book of Grotesques), published in Nuremberg in 1610 by Jamnitzer himself. This collection was intended as a source of inspiration for silversmiths and their apprentices. It showcases a dazzling array of cartouches, medallions, candelabras, and coiled leather designs, all intricately adorned with grotesque masks, clumsy putti, and hybrid monsters.nFrom this book, these four sheets each feature four oval grotesques, depicting a total of sixteen scenes. These imaginative compositions include mermaids, mermen, putti, sea horses, and sea monsters.
