Description: This richly engraved map of maritime Southeast Asia, India quae orientalis dicitur, et insulae adjacentes (India, so-called the East, and adjacent islands), was first issued by Henricus Hondius in 1636 and included in Volume 3 of the Atlas Novusthe first volume of the series to appear. Volumes 1 and 2 followed in 1638, completing the original three-volume set.nThis example comes from one of the later French-language editions, issued c. 1650s1660s. It features a Latin dedication to Christophorus Thisius, a Leiden scholar and humanist patron. The French descriptive text on the verso confirms its inclusion in the Atlas Nouveau, the French edition of the Atlas Novus.nCartographically, the map is grounded in the work of Hessel Gerritsz, the Dutch East India Companys first official cartographer, and records early Dutch encounters with the Australian continent:nDirk Hartog (1616): t Landt van Eendracht (Western Australia)nLenaert Jacobszoon (1618): Mauritius RiviernFrederik de Houtman and Jacob Dedel (1628): G.F. de Wits LandtnJan Carstensz (1623): western Cape York PeninsulanAlso noted is the 1622 wreck of the Trial off the Montebello Islandsthe first documented European shipwreck on the Australian coast.nTo the north, New Guinea is depicted as a long, tapering island lying close to the Cape York Peninsula, reflecting the geographic ambiguity that followed Willem Janszoons 1606 Duyfken voyage, when part of northern Australia was first charted by a European and mistakenly thought to be a southern extension of New Guinea.nThis map stands as a significant milestone in the history of Australian and Pacific exploration, synthesising VOC navigational data and Dutch maritime achievements in a format intended for a European readership.
