Description: A large scale map of the Indian Ocean covering an area from the Cape of Good Hope in the west to Australia in the east. It records Abel Tasmans first voyage in 164243 to Australia, Alexandre Chevalier de Chaumont's journey to Siam (today Thailand) in 1685-86 and Francisco Pelsaert's voyage in the ship Batavia in 1629. Simon Dewez noted that this map 'is one of the few to track the Batavia to Australia's west coast, where it was shipwrecked on the Frederik de Houtman Abrolhos just before day-break on 4 June 1629.' nThe map also depicts most of the early Dutch contacts with the west coast of Australia. These include discoveries of Dirk Hartog in 1616, Frederik de Houtman in 1619, the galleon Leeuwins contact in 1622 and Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt's in 1628. Pieter Nuyts discoveries of 1627 in the t Gulden Zeepar are noted on the South Australian coast. The 1623 exploits of Jan Carstenszoon and Willem Joosten van Colster in Cape York and Arnhem land are also recorded.
