Description: Johannes Janssonius was born into a family of publishers and booksellers, gaining experience in book printing from a young age. In 1612, he married Elisabeth Hondius, the daughter of the renowned mapmaker Jodocus Hondius I ( #80, #212, #253, #272) and his wife, Colette ( #113). Six years later, Janssonius established his own cartographic shop next door to his competitor, Willem Blaeu ( #9, #76, #108, #121, #351, #358). By 1630, he had partnered with his brother-in-law, Henricus Hondius ( #18, #82, #114, #123, #126, #378). That same year, they released a supplement to the Mercator-Hondius Atlas titled Atlantis majoris appendix, sive pars altera, which gradually expanded over the years.nBeginning in 1638, the atlas was renamed Atlas novus (Dutch: Nieuwen Atlas; French: Nouveau Theatre du Monde ou nouvel atlas; German: Novus Atlas, das ist Weltbeschreibung) and expanded to three volumes. A fourth volume was added in 1646, followed by a fifth in 1650, which was split into two parts: Atlas maritimus (Part 1) and Atlas antiquus (Part 2). This map is from Part 1 of the German edition, titled Das Fünffte theil des Grossen Atlantis, welches begreiffet eie wasser-welt (The Fifth Part of the Great Atlas, which comprises the water world).nThe maps focus is the Indian Ocean and surrounding regions, including Africa, India, East Indies and Terra del Zur (todays Australia). Janssonius documented early Dutch discoveries along Australias western and southern coasts:n''Dirk Hartog (1616): ''n Aboard the Eendracht, accidentally discovered Dirk Hartog Island.n Charted the western coast of Australia up to about 22 S ('tLandt van dEendracht, 1616 and Dirck Hartogs ree[de]).nWillem de Houtman and Jacob dEdel (1619):n Sighted land near modern-day Perth, naming it dEdelsland.n Charted the Houtman Abrolhos islands and Turtle Dove Shoal (Tortelduyf).nCrew of the Leeuwin (1622):n Charted the southwestern coast of Australia (t Landt vande Leeuwin det 1622).nJan Carstenszoon (1623):n Aboard the Pera and Arnhem, explored New Guineas south coast.n Charted the western coast of Cape York Peninsula and named Staaten Rivier.nPieter Nuyts (1627):n Explored the southern coast from Cape Leeuwin to the Nuyts Archipelago (tLandt van P. Nuyts, 26 Jan 1627).nGerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628):n Grounded near Australias northwest coast (near Port Hedland) and continued mapping southward.nNotable non-Dutch contribution Captain John Brookes (1622):n Commander of the English ship Trial, which ran aground near the Montebello Islands (Trial Rocks).nAlthough this map was published several years after Abel Tasman's voyages of 1642-43 and 1644, his discoveries are not shown on this map. It was later updated to include them ( #255).
