Description: Robert Laurie and James Whittle, prominent British mapmakers and publishers, were highly regarded for their detailed and practical maritime charts. Their New Chart of the Indian and Pacific Oceans covers the region from eastern Africa, across the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific. Australia is labelled as New Holland, with its eastern coastline identified as the Eastern Coast of New South Wales. The map also features speculative coastlines connecting Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) to the mainland.nThe chart was originally prepared by Robert Sayer in 1787 under a different title and reissued in 1790. Laurie and Whittle reissued the chart in May 1794, retaining the original title, A New Chart of the Indian and Pacific Oceans Between the Cape of Good Hope. In 1797, the title had been updated to Laurie & Whittle's New Chart….. By 1800, the chart had been updated to include additional information and was subsequently reissued in later states, including one dated 1803, without significant changes.nThe maps title highlights the inclusion of routes travelled by English, Spanish, French, and Dutch navigators, with particular focus on the voyages of the Walpole and the Royal Admiral. Captain Thomas Butler, commanding the Walpole between 1792 and 1793, navigated from the Cape of Good Hope to China, via a route south and east of Australia. Meanwhile, Captain Essex Henry Bond, aboard the Royal Admiral, completed three voyages between 1790 and 1795, two of which were convict transportation missions from England to Australia.nThe chart documents a wide range of significant voyages:n Luis Váez de Torres (1606)n William Dampier (1688, aboard Cygnet)n William Dampier (16991700, aboard Roebuck)n Captain Hay (1739, aboard Eagle)n Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier (1739, aboard Mary / la Marie)n Philip Carteret (1767, aboard Swallow)n Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1768, aboard La Boudeuse)n Jean-François-Marie de Surville (1769, aboard St. John Baptist)n Louis Aleno de St. Allouarn (1772)n Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne (1772)n Julien Crozet (1772)n Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec (1772)n Captain James Cook and Tobias Furneaux (1773, aboard Adventure)n John Shortland (1778, aboard Alexander)n Captain John Marshall and Captain Thomas Gilbert (1788, aboard Scarborough)n Captain James Larkins (1788, aboard Warren Hastings)n Captain Essex Henry Bond (179293, aboard Royal Admiral)n Captain Thomas Butler (1794, aboard Walpole)
