Description: This volume is the official Dutch account of the Nassau Fleet expedition, which departed Amsterdam in 1623 under the command of Admiral Jacques l'Hermite. Conducted with eleven ships, the voyage circumnavigated the globe over four years (16231626) in an effort to establish a direct and practicable route to the East Indies via Cape Horn, as an alternative to the Strait of Magellan.nAccording to map historian Rodney Shirley, the journal was likely authored by the fleets navigator Johann van Walbeeck. The work is distinguished by its engraved title page, containing the earliest printed world map to record a verified European discovery on the Australian coast. The map marks t'Landt van Eendracht, commemorating Dirk Hartogs 1616 landing at Shark Bay in Western Australia. A dotted line extending southwest suggests the cartographer's awarenessor suspicionof a more extensive southern landmass.nThe map isattributed to Hessel Gerritsz, the principal cartographer of the Amsterdam Chamber of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
