Description: Jean Baptiste Nolin was a French cartographer and publisher who worked in Paris during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He gained the attention of the Italian mapmaker Vincenzo Maria Coronelli while Coronelli was in Paris at the invitation of Louis XIV. Nolin engraved many of Coronelli's maps, including the gores for his celestial globe (View Record (#6),View Record (#66),View Record (#346),View Record (#386),View Record (#421)). nIn 1700, Nolin published a large world map titled Le Globe Terrestre. The two sheets represent the eastern hemisphere. According to Simon Dewez, the top sheet is from the reissued 1708 edition, which includes additional geographical names, while the bottom sheet, showing Australia, is from the original 1700 edition. The geographical content of this hemisphere is notableAustralia is depicted with a new eastern coastline, in provisional shading, linking Papua New Guinea and Tasmania. This feature appeared on many later 18th-century maps and was not corrected until Captain Cook's discoveries in the 1770s.
