Description: Giacomo Gastaldi was the leading Italian cartographer of the 16th century. During the mid-1500s, he created three maps of Southeast Asia. The first, this map, was published in 1548 as part of Pietro Andrea Mattioli's Italian translation of Claudius Ptolemys Geographia. The second, produced in 1554 ( #28), was included in Giovanni Ramusios three-volume collection of travel accounts, Delle navigationi et viaggi ( #352). The third was a separately published map of Asia from 1561.nThe 1548 edtion of Geographia contains sixty double-page maps, twenty-six ancient or Ptolemaic maps, and thirty-four new or contemporary maps, including this regional map of Southeast Asia. It extends from the Bay of Bengal in the west to the Spice Islands in the east and from southern China in the north to the island of Java in the south. It was composed from a number of contemporary sources, including Gastaldis own world map of 1546, the travel account of Ludovico di Varthema, the Italian explorer who claimed to have visited the Moluccas in 1505, as well as information from the Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, particularly in relation to the Philippines. It also records to the northwest of Timor, an erupting volcano named 'Ocape'. According to Thomas Suarez this is Gunung Api, which is the Malay for fire mountain, a descriptive name given to small active volcano islands.
