Description: This single engraved globe gore by Vincenzo Coronelli, originally designed in 1688 for his monumental 42-inch terrestrial globe, was later adapted for atlas format and published in the Isolario (16961697) or the Libro dei Globi (1693 and 1701). The gore prominently depicts New Holland (modern-day Australia), labelled in both Dutch (Het Niew Hollandt) and Italian (Nuova Hollanda). nWithin the landmass, Coronelli included two inscriptions reflecting contemporary theories based on Marco Polos accounts:nUpper inscription: Suggests that some believed Marco Polo referred to this region as the "Land of Lochac," with the Island of Pentan and the Kingdom of Malaiur located a further 500 miles beyond.nLower inscription: Discusses the debate regarding the location of Java Minor, proposing that while some associated it with Sumatra, others speculated it could correspond to Sumbawa or even New Holland.nThe gore is richly decorated with illustrations of exotic flora and fauna, including palm trees and deer, alongside human figures: men carrying spears, a shelter with seated individuals, and a procession led by an elephant.
