Description: Johannes Cloppenburg, a Dutch bookseller active in early seventeenth-century Amsterdam, is best known for producing the fourth and final edition of Jodocus Hondius Is Atlas minor (originally published in 1607). In 1630, Cloppenburg commissioned Pieter van den Keere to engrave a new series of maps for a compact world atlas, published under the title Gerardi Mercatoris, Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes… Although Cloppenburg was relatively unknown, he retained the prestigious Hondius name on the title page, likely to enhance commercial appeal following the deaths of Jodocus Hondius I and II. nAccording to map historian Rodney Shirley, the world map in its first state was used for editions of the Atlas in 1631, 1632 and 1636. A key feature is the small stretch of coastline labelled Tlant van Eendracht in the lower-right quadrant of the eastern hemispherethe first depiction of any part of Australia in an atlas map. This reference traces to Dutch explorer Dirk Hartogs 1616 landing on what is now Dirk Hartog Island off the coast of Western Australia. Commanding the ship Eendracht, Hartog charted part of the coastline after being blown off course en route to the Dutch East Indies.nThe maps elaborate decorative scheme incorporates allegorical figures representing the four classical elements: Earth (Terra) with a cornucopia (upper left); Fire (Ignis) with a salamander (upper right); Air (Aer) with a bird of paradise (lower left); and Water (Aqua) with a sea monster (lower right). Biblical scenes at the top and bottomThe Temptation in the Garden of Eden and the Last Judgementadd a spiritual and moral layer to the work, reflecting the broader cosmographical tradition that merged religious and scientific worldviews.
