Description: This unrecorded 1680 edition of Michel-Antoine Baudrands double hemisphere world map, printed on two joined sheets, is based on a version first published in Rome in 1658 by the prominent printer Giovanni Giacomo Rossi. The original attribution and publication details are preserved in the cartouche on the western hemisphere, while the eastern hemisphere bears a dedication to Cardinal Azzoliniunderscoring the maps elite patronage and intended scholarly or ecclesiastical audience.nEncircling the hemispheres is a decorative border comprising two celestial spheres, two polar projections, and two circular wind diagrams, reflecting contemporary cosmographic interests and the integration of terrestrial and celestial knowledge.nGeographically, Baudrand drew primarily on Nicolas Sansons 1651 world map, but his treatment of the southern regionsparticularly Nova Olanda (modern-day Australia)is distinctive. His depiction of the northern coastline features a deliberate gap at the base of the Cape York Peninsula, suggesting a possible passage from Java to Van Diemens Land, echoing Dutch theories of a navigable strait derived from Tasmans discoveries.nBaudrand includes several toponyms west of this hypothetical passage, drawn from Tasmans second voyage of 1644: F di Alfeno, Fi di Tasmano, C. Maria, Limmens Golfo, Paese di Arnheim, I. de Cocodrilli, and Capo di Vuile. Discoveries from Tasmans earlier 164243 voyage are also noted, with more extensive coverage of present-day Tasmania and New Zealand.nStrikingly, Baudrand represents Terra de Papous (New Guinea) as a separate island, clearly divided from Cape York by an open strait. This depictionalso derived from Sansons 1651 mapdiverges from more typical representations of the era, which often showed New Guinea as connected to the southern continent or to Australia itself.
