Description: Arnold Colom, the son of Amsterdam bookseller and chartmaker Jacob Colom, was a prominent seventeenth-century printer and publisher. He is best known for two major nautical works: De Vyerighe Colom (1633), a Mediterranean pilot guide, and Zee-Atlas ofte Water-Wereldt, a grand-format sea atlas of the world issued in editions of 1654, 1656, and 1658. Noted for their precision and elegance, Coloms charts reflect the expanding maritime knowledge of the Dutch Golden Age.nThese two charts, numbered 15 and 16 in the 1658 edition, focus on the Indian Ocean and adjacent regions:n''Chart 15: The Western Indian Ocean''nSpanning from the Red Sea and Cape of Good Hope to the Indian subcontinent and Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka), this chart offers a detailed rendering of Madagascar and the scattered islands of the Indian Ocean. It reflects the eras growing European engagement with key maritime routes to Asia.n''Chart 16: The Eastern Indian Ocean''nThe second chart depicts Southeast Asia, parts of the Malay Archipelago, and a portion of Australia's coastline. It is particularly significant for recording early Dutch explorations of the Australian continent, including references to:n Dirk Hartog (1616), who first charted Australia's western coast (t Landt van Eendracht); n Frederick de Houtman (1619) continued detailing the west coast;n The Leeuwin (1622), a Dutch ship whose name was later assigned to the southwestern cape of Australia, now known as Cape Leeuwin;n Jan Carstenszoon and Willem Joosten van Colster (1623), who explored northern Australia, including Cape York and Arnhem Land;n Pieter Nuyts (1627), who mapped parts of Australia's southern coast board the 't Gulden Zeepaert (Golden Seahorse).n Gerrit Frederikszoon de Witt (1628), whose exploration contributed to mapping part of Australia's coastline, now known as G.F. de Wits LandnTogether, these charts form an important cartographic record of Dutch maritime exploration in the Indian Ocean and early European knowledge of Australia.
