Description: This engraving, titled Tres Deae Paridem Conveniunt (The Three Goddesses Meet with Paris), depicts Venus, Juno, and Minervaeach labelled by nameawaiting Paris's judgment. Engraved by Adriaen Collaert and based on a 1587 drawing by Stradanus (Jan van der Straet), (now in Washington), the work was published by Joan Galle.Collaerts engraving introduces additional details absent in van der Straets original drawing: the goddesses names, the Latin title and a poetic inscription:nE coelo ad Paridem veniunt tria numina Divinum / O quantum laudis vana cupido valet!n(From heaven to Paris come the three Divine Deities / Oh how much vain desire of praise is worth!).nThe scene draws from a myth detailed in Homers Iliad, beginning with the wedding of Peleus and Thetis (parents of Achilles). All gods were invited, except Eris, the goddess of discord, who was excluded due to her reputation for causing strife. Furious, at being slighted, Eris disrupted the celebration by tossing a golden apple inscribed "for the fairest" into the gathering.nJuno, Minerva, and Venus each claimed the apple and turned to Jupiter for judgment. Unwilling to choose, Jupiter delegated the task to Paris, a mortal Trojan prince. Swayed by Venuss promise of Helena of Troy, the most beautiful woman, Paris awarded the apple to Venus. This pivotal decision set in motion the chain of events that led to the Trojan War, a pivotal story in classical literature and art.
