Description: This set of three engraved globe gores was produced by Vincenzo Coronelli in Venice in 1688, forming part of the printed version of his monumental terrestrial globes originally created for King Louis XIV of France. Designed for a globe measuring 110 cm (42 inches) in diameter, these gores specifically cover China, Indochina, the Philippines, Korea, and Japan.nVincenzo Coronelli, a Franciscan friar, mathematician, and cartographer, was one of the most celebrated geographical minds of the seventeenth century. Entering the Franciscan Order at fifteen and later ordained as a priest, Coronelli initially focused on theology before turning to mathematics, astronomy, and cartography. He studied in Venice, Ravenna, and Paris, refining his skills in geography and engraving. In 1680, Coronelli founded the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti ("Cosmographic Academy of the Argonauts"), the worlds first geographical society. In 1681, he was invited to Paris by Louis XIV to construct two monumental manuscript globesterrestrial and celestialeach over four metres in diameter. Completed in 1683, these globes reflected the latest geographical discoveries and symbolised Frances global ambitions.nAfter returning to Venice in 1684, Coronelli established a cartographic workshop at the Convent of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. From there, he produced numerous maps and atlases, including the Atlante Veneto ("Venetian Atlas," 169196) and the Corso Geografico Universale ("Universal Geographical Course," 169297). In 1688, he created the printed edition of the Kings globes, scaled to 110 cm in diameter, making his advanced cartographic work accessible to a broader scholarly and aristocratic audience.nThe three gores presented here are part of that printed globe project, offering a richly detailed portrayal of East Asia. Coastlines, river systems, and cities are rendered with exceptional precision, reflecting Coronellis deep commitment to scientific accuracy while maintaining the ornate, artistic style that characterised his globes. Inscriptions note important geographic, ethnographic, and navigational details, blending contemporary European knowledge with inherited classical traditions.
