Description: This northern sea chart belongs to Van Keulens series of contiguous navigation charts covering the eastern and central Indian Ocean, then commonly referred to as the AEthiopische Zee. Together with its companion southern sea chart (View Record (#465)), extending from Cabo del Gado to Rio de Santa Lucia, these sheets formed a coherent cartographic system critical to navigation for the Dutch East India Company (VOC).nThis chart covers latitudes approximately 18 north to 10 south, extending from the Red Sea to Cabo del Gado south of Zanzibar, and eastward to the Maldives. It encompasses the north-western Indian Ocean, including the island Diego Garcia and numerous islands, reefs, and coastal features. This chart was of particular relevance to the VOC because of the coffee trade with the port of Mocha, or ships that would be on the way to Dutch Ceylon or Malabar.
