Description: This rare southern sea chart belongs to Van Keulens series of contiguous navigation charts covering the eastern and central Indian Ocean, then commonly referred to as the AEthiopische Zee. Together with its companion northern sea chart (View Record (#467)) Red Sea to Cabo del Gado south of Zanzibar, reaching eastward to the Maldives, these sheets formed a coherent cartographic system critical to navigation for the Dutch East India Company (VOC).nThis chart covers latitudes from approximately 9.5 south to 28 south, extending from Cabo del Gado to Rio de Santa Lucia. While a narrower version was included in Zee-Fakkel, Vol. 4 (1753), the present example is the expanded eastern state, issued only as a separate loose chart between c. 1726 and 1755. This extended version incorporates a substantial eastern addition covering the central Indian Ocean, including Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues, St Brandon, and extensive reefs and shoals. To the west, it depicts the African coastline from southern Africa north to Mozambique, all of Madagascar, and island groups including the Seychelles. This expanded state was never bound into atlases and is virtually unrecorded on the market.
