Description: This large engraved plan depicts Batavia, the principal administrative and commercial centre of the Dutch East India Company in Southeast Asia. Published in Amsterdam in 1780 by Petrus Conradi and engraved by A. van Krevelt, the plan records the city as surveyed in 1770 under the governorship of Petrus Albertus van der Parra.nThe plan shows Batavias characteristic orthogonal grid, intersected by canals and streets adapted to the marshy coastal terrain of northwest Java. Oriented toward the harbor, the composition is dominated by the Kasteel Batavia, a heavily fortified bastioned complex overlooking the roadstead and serving as the administrative and military heart of the colony. Surrounding it are government buildings, churches, warehouses, hospitals, residential quarters, and ethnically defined districts, identified through a detailed keyed legend.nMore than a topographical record, the plan reflects Dutch colonial strategies of urban control, surveillance, and defense, as well as Batavias role as a central node in the VOCs Asian trade network. As the city later evolved into modern Jakarta, the plan remains a vital document of late eighteenth-century colonial urbanism.
