Description: This map appears on page 553 of Volume 6 of Sacri, sive doctissimorum virorum in SS. Biblia annotationes & tractatus, published in London by Thomas Roycroft in 1660. Produced in the aftermath of the English Civil War, this monumental compilation of biblical scholarship brought together critical theological and exegetical writings by leading Continental scholars and reflects the renewed intellectual and religious engagement of Restoration England with European learning. Multiple editions of the Sacri were issued in London between 1660 and 1690.nThe map derives from the celebrated world map engraved under the direction of Benito Arias Montanus for the Biblia Sacra (Antwerp, 1572, View Record (#111)) and preserves its original theological intent. Conceived as a visual counterpart to biblical exegesis, it presents a postdiluvian vision of the world, illustrating the dispersal of Noahs descendants following the Flood. Through a system of alphabetical and numerical references, the map assigns the lands of the known world to the genealogies of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, integrating sacred history with geographic knowledge.nIn its English context, the map reflects continued interest in reconciling scripture with geography during the seventeenth century. Its inclusion in the Sacri underscores the importance of visual aids in theological scholarship and demonstrates the enduring authority of Arias Montanuss work nearly a century after its creation. The reuse of the copperplatehere printed from a newly prepared platealso attests to the lasting relevance of the map within Protestant intellectual culture.
