Description: This cadastral map shows parish boundaries and land holdings within the County of Cumberland, which encompasses the city of Sydney.nMost of the Sydney metropolitan area lies within Cumberland County, stretching from Broken Bay in the north to the northern suburbs of Wollongong in the south. Established shortly after British colonization in 1788, it was the first county created in Australia, adhering to the British system of land management using counties and parishes. The name Cumberland was chosen by Governor Arthur Phillip on June 4, 1788, in honor of Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland, to mark the birthday of his brother, King George III.nBy 1835, Cumberland County was divided into 57 parishes, as shown in this edition of the map.
