Description: Johannes Metellus was a French humanist with wide-ranging interests in cartography, geography, law, paleography, and antiquarianism. He spent much of his early life travelling across Europe, building connections with fellow humanists, particularly in Italy. Later, he moved to Louvain, which is notable because it was there that the first edition of Cornelis Wytfliets maps of the Americas was published in 1597 (#226). nMetellus eventually settled in Cologne, where he became involved in that city's cartographic publishing industry. In 1601 he published a Latin work on islands titled Insularium orbis aliquot insularum tabulis aeneis delineationem continens. This publication included four mapsdepicting the islands of Ambon, Banda, Bali, and Javapresented on a single sheet. The text on the verso describes these islands in detail. The map of Bali, appears to be a direct copy of Willem Lodewijcksz.s map from 1598.
