Description: This map by Giovanni Battista Mazza is one of three significant maps illustrating the connection between the Americas, Asia, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The other two maps Abraham Ortelius's Maris Pacifici (1589) (View Record (#221)) and Frans Hogenberg Americae et proximarum regionum orae descriptio (View Record (#130)).nFor many years, the chronological relationship between Orteliuss Maris Pacifici and the maps by Hogenberg and Mazza was unclear. However, in 1995, Richard Casten and Thomas Suarez determined that Hogenberg's map was a source for the Maris Pacifici and the primary model for Mazza's work. The latter two maps were produced independently around the same time.nThis map contains far more geographic detail and extensive annotations than the other two. nThere are two states of this map:nState 1: Lower left: "Venetiis Donati Rascicotti formis." / "Gio. Bat. Mazza fece."nState 2: The Rascicotti and Mazza imprints are erased but barely visible.
