Description: This finely engraved folio world map was published in Antwerp in 1630 by Pieter Verbiest, a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers. While Pieter is credited as engraver and publisher in the lower left edge of Magallanica, the map also names his brother, Isack Verbiest, in the titlesuggesting his involvement in its production.nThe map employs Mercators projection and closely follows Pieter van den Keeres 1622 world map, with selective modifications. The ornamental corner panels found in van den Keeres version are replaced by two polar hemispheres, and the cartouche in the upper right remains blank. A new and prominent cartouche over North America includes a portrait of Jacques LHermite, commander of the Nassausche Vloot (162326), surrounded by nine smaller portrait medallions of circumnavigators.nAbove the map, a decorative border features allegorical personifications of the four continentsEurope, Asia, Africa, and Americaeach set in a symbolic landscape. These figures are derived from Jan Sadelers 1581 engravings after designs by Dirck Barendsz (Hollstein XXI, nos. 499502), a familiar motif in European mapmaking of the period.nGeographically, the map introduces only minor revisions to van den Keeres layout. California is depicted as an island, accompanied by a note speculating on a possible passage from the Mare Septentrionale to Davis Straitan idea linked to northern voyages such as those of Henry Hudson. In South America, toponyms from the Nassausche Vloot are added alongside those recorded during Jacob Le Maires earlier circumnavigation. The outline of Magallanica/Terra Australis remains speculative, but the shaping of New Guinea and today's Cape York Peninsula reflects knowledge gained from Jan Carstenszs 1623 voyage aboard the Pera.nA manuscript annotation on the verso, in French, reads table des quartes parties du monde (map of the four quarters of the world).Verbiests map embodies the transitional phase of early seventeenth-century cartography. It combines established mapmaking styles with fresh discoveries and ornamentation relecting Antwerps ambition to lead in both accuracy and artistic appeal.
