Description: Gerard Mercator Jr.s map of Asia draws heavily from his grandfathers renowned 1569 world map. It highlights the Asian continent with a particular focus on the Spice Islands, especially the Moluccas.nThe map extends westward to include a portion of North America, separated from Asia by the mythical Strait of Anian. Notable toponyms in this region include Anian and Quivira, the latter believed to mark the legendary Seven Cities of Gold sought by Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado in 1541.nIn the southeast, the map features Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, and the Spice Islands. A portion of New Guinea is visible in the lower right corner, positioned just north of Australis Pars, the hypothesised southern landmass yet to be discovered.nAfter Jodocus Hondius acquired the map's plates in 1606, he updated and refined them, preserving the map's relevance and cementing its historical significance.
