Description: The Atlas of Australasia was the first national atlas printed in Australia. It features five large maps of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, North Australia or Albert Land (now the Northern Territory), and South Australia. Additionally, it includes two smaller maps, one of the world and one of Australasia. The colony maps were created using government maps of the time, along with observations made by Proeschel, his colleagues, and new information arriving in Melbourne. Each map is preceded by a statistical table providing details about the respective colony, except for Queensland, which had only recently been established (1859).Born in France in 1809, Proeschel moved to Victoria in 1852 to join the gold rush. Based in Melbourne, he began producing maps of routes to the goldfields as well as general maps of Victoria and Melbourne. At the time, Proeschel was the only private map publisher in Victoria, allowing him to create a diverse range of maps compared to what was typically available. In May 1860, he became a member of the Royal Society of Victoria, and by 1863, he had published the Atlas of Australasia. Despite its critical acclaim, it is believed that Proeschel did not recoup his significant 3000 investment. He left Australia in 1864, pursued a few other ventures, and eventually settled back in France, where he died in 1870 with an estate of just 40 francs.
