Description: Henri Abraham Châtelain in conjunction with his father Zacharie and brother Zacharie junior produced the Atlas historique under several different Chatelain imprints, depending on the Chatelain family partnerships at the time of publication.nIt was published in seven volumes: Volume 1 in 1705, volumes 2 and 3 (volume 2, second part) in 1708, volume 4 in 1714, volumes 5 and 6 in 1719 and volume 7 in 1720. The Atlas was encyclopaedic, educational, and moralistic. It provided dissertations and chronologies of historical events, maps ( 247 and 248), which were engraved by Henri and primarily based on those of the French mapmaker Guillaume Delisle, as well as pages on governmental, ( 249 and 250), military and ecclesiastical institutionsnSix different titlepages are associated with the Atlas historique ( #302 and #361). These are the work of Romeijn de Hooghe and were engraved by J. Goeree, T. Schynyoet and P. Sluyter. This titlepage originates from the fourth volume was published in 1714. It shows an allegorical scene in honour of Gustav Adolph, King of Sweden, and was designed by Jan Goeree, drawn by Schijnvoet and engraved by Sluyter. It shows the cold wind of the north, with rain and blustery storms. Two bears lie couchant at the foot. The two main crowned female figures represent the royal kingdoms of Denmark (left) and Austria (right) each with their appropriate armorial shield. Austria's foot is on a prostrate body of a naked and defeated Turk a reminder of the stemming of the Ottoman invasion of Europe outside the walls of Vienna in 1683. Another crowned figure behind Denmark is that of Sweden with an oval medallion in the background, supported by putti, of the legendary King Gustavus Adolphus II (r.16111632). The figure of Sweden is offering scrolls of archives to the winged muse of History who is seated on a central monumental plinth: behind her the figure of Geography holds out a map on which is marked Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Pomerania, Prussia and Moscovy. Other images -ships, trade, navigation, cannonry, coniferous trees and heavy cloudsremind the viewer of features of the countries of northern Europe
