Description: This large-format sea chart of the Indian Ocean, drawn on Mercators projection, was produced for official use by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Extending from the Cape of Good Hope to Canton, it was issued separately rather than included in any printed atlas. The chart replaced vellum manuscript charts in VOC use from 1755 onwards and became the standard reference aboard VOC vessels sailing the Indian Ocean.nThe chart is known in three distinct states:nProof State: A rare incomplete proof with a manuscript title and dedication pasted directly onto the sheet. Only one known example is recorded (Amsterdam University Library).n''State 1 (Post-1753)'': Featrues a fully printed title and dedication. Known from two institutional copies in Utrecht University Library and the Dutch National Archives in The Hague.nState 2: Identical to State 1, with the addition of a printed note south of Java. Also preserved in Utrecht University Library and the Dutch National Archives.nThis Caart van dIndische zee exemplifies the VOCs transition from vellum manuscript cartography to printed charts for practical navigation, marking a pivotal development in mid-eighteenth-century maritime practice. Though unsigned, its style and production quality reflect the standards of VOC hydrographic offices and their centralised cartographic oversight.nAs a rare surviving working chart commissioned at the height of the VOCs maritime power, it offers an important record of the tools used to sustain Dutch dominance across the Indian Ocean trade routes.
