Description: This reduced version of Louis de Freycinets general map of Australia was issued in the Atlas Historique, part of the revised second edition of the official account of the Baudin expedition (18001804). First published in 1811 (#64 and View Record (#168)) at full scale in the Atlas to the Partie Navigation et Géographie, the 1824 edition offers a more compact presentation of the French coastal surveys undertaken during the expedition.nNotably, this version omits many of the original French toponyms, replacing them with their English counterpartsan implicit acknowledgment of British colonial consolidation in the region. The map is decorated in the lower-left corner with a vignette by Charles Lesueur, depicting the French Imperial eagle grasping a title banner above ships and native Australian fauna.nA cartouche below the image reads:nAvertissement: Cette carte de la Nouvelle-Hollande est une réduction exacte de celle contenue dans la première édition du Voyage aux Terres Australes. (This map of New Holland is an exact reduction of that contained in the first edition of the Voyage to the Southern Lands.)nThis edition underscores the transition from French imperial ambition to British geographic dominance in Australia, while still asserting the scientific legacy of the Baudin expedition
