Description: This rare proof map on silk, titled Carte dune partie du grand archipel dAsie (Plate LX), shows the islands of Timor and Flores and forms part of the cartographic record of Nicolas Baudins expedition to the southern lands (18001804). It is attributed to Louis Claude de Freycinet, the expeditions hydrographer and editor of the Partie Navigation et Géographie volume (View Record (#263)).nAccording to Simon Dewez, this example represents an early proof state, likely produced in advance of the published version that appeared in the 1812 atlas. The map shows notable differences in title, imprint, and plate numbering, distinguishing it from the final state issued with the atlas. Its survival on silk, an uncommon and delicate medium, suggests it may have been intended as a presentation copy or working proof, underscoring its rarity and significance in the early production process of French hydrographic charts.nFreycinet was responsible for much of the cartographic output of the Baudin expedition and would go on to publish the more refined maps in his Atlas volume of 1812 (View Record (#263)).
