Description: This unsigned titlepage is from the fourth book of John Speeds atlas, titled The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, first published 1611-1612. It was the first atlas of the British Isles, and the first attempt by an Englishman at atlas production on a scale comparable with the great continental publishing houses.nThe title page shows the royal arms of King James of England. The shield is divided into four quarters that include elements from the arms France, Scotland, and Ireland. In the first and fourth quarters are the fleur-de-lis, representing France, and three golden lions on a red background, symbolising England. The Arms of Scotland, a red lion (rampant) inside a red border, is in the second quarter, and the Arms of Irelands golden harp with strings on a blue background is in the third quarter.nThe lion and the unicorn supporting the shield represent England and Scotland respectively. They stand on a small cartouche that includes the plant emblems of Scotland (thistle) and England (rose). The cartouche has the sovereigns motto Dieu et mon droit (God and my right). Around the shield is a belt or strap with the Order of the Garters motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (Evil to him who evil thinks). Above the shield is the barred helmet, a royal crown topped with a golden crowned lion
