Description: Joris van Spilbergen, a Flemish explorer, undertook the fifth recorded circumnavigation of the world between 1614 and 1618, following in the footsteps of Ferdinand Magellan, Sir Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish, and Olivier van Noort. An accomplished admiral, Spilbergen had earlier sailed to the Indies (Ceylon) for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His earlier journey, documented in the book De reis van Joris van Spilbergen naar Ceylon, Atjeh en Bantam, 1601-1604 (The Voyage of Joris van Spilbergen to Ceylon, Aceh, and Bantam 16011604), underscores his pivotal role in Dutch exploration and early interactions with Asian territories.nThe book features this frontispiece portrait of Spilbergen, portraying him in formal attire with a commanding and dignified expression, befitting his status as a distinguished naval officer. The inscription surrounding his head reads: "A[e]tat Georgy. a. Speilbergen sua 54," referencing his age at the time (54 years).
