Description: This map of the Southern Hemisphere was produced for De Vaugondy's submission to the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris and was first published in 1773. It includes the routes of recent expeditions by explorers such as Abel Tasman, James Cook, Samuel Wallis, Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, and Philip Carteret, as well as the newly discovered islands of Kerguelen and Bouvet. The text in the corners provides coordinates for various locations and a proposed mathematical formula for calculating distances between different points.nThere are 3 states of the map: nFirst state: nla.gov.au/nla.map-rm1871 – no text aound the map nSecond state: nla.gov.au/nla.map-t1003 – text in the four cornersnThird state: nla.gov.au/nla.map-nk9789 – revised and updated with astronomical observations (date of 1777 in the bottom left corner) and the addition of James Cook's tracks in the Resolution in 1773, 1774 and 1775
