Description: This early woodcut map by Peter Apian appears in his influential manual Cosmographicus liber, first published in 1524. Rendered in the traditional T-O format, the map reflects medieval geographical conventions, with the world divided into three continentsAsia, Africa, and Europeencircled by ocean. The map is oriented with East at the top and is framed by twelve wind-heads representing classical directional winds, each named in Latin and personified as blowing spirits.nApianuss cosmography, combining geography, astronomy, and navigation, became a foundational Renaissance textbook, widely reprinted and translated across Europe. The schematic map was intended for didactic rather than navigational purposes, illustrating the worldview inherited from classical and Christian authorities. Its enduring popularity helped disseminate geographic concepts at a time of rapid expansion in European exploration.
