Description: Marriage A-la-Mode is a series of six engravings based on oil paintings by William Hogarth. As in the original paintings, the prints offer a scathing critique of the idea that the aristocracy and wealthy live moral or virtuous lives. Hogarth satirises the institution of arranged marriage, portraying a young couple and their circle engaging in infidelity, drunkenness, gambling, and various other vices.The fourth engraving captures the violent climax of the affair. The Earl has discovered his wife and Silvertongue at the Turks Head Bagnio. In the struggle, Silvertongue has stabbed the Earl and flees half-dressed through the window.nThe dying Earl collapses against a table, while the innkeeper and watchmen burst into the room. The Countess kneels barefoot, wringing her hands in a gesture of shock and remorse. Her dishevelled appearance and the overturned furniture evoke the chaotic and illicit nature of the encounter.nA tapestry depicting the biblical story of Lot and his daughtersa tale of incest and moral collapsehangs in the background, adding a layer of symbolic commentary on the breakdown of familial and social order.
