Description: This detailed maritime chart of Java, along with parts of Sumatra and Borneo, was published in 1705 by Hendrick Doncker II, who succeeded his father as head of the Doncker publishing firm after Hendrick Doncker Is death in 1699. It forms part of De nieuwe groote vermeerderde Zeeatlas, the expanded sea atlas first issued in 1676 and updated into the early eighteenth century.nThe map focuses on Java, a critical hub of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), with Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) clearly marked. As a paskaart, it was designed for practical use at sea, providing essential navigational information including coastal outlines, soundings, shoals, rhumb lines, and anchoragesinformation essential to VOC pilots navigating the treacherous waters of the Indonesian archipelago.nThis chart exemplifies the transition between the pioneering work of Doncker I and the more expansive commercial output of later publishers. It may be directly compared with Johannes van Keulens influential charts of Java (View Record (#261)), which appeared in the Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel from 1681 onwards. Van Keulens firm eventually absorbed much of the Doncker stock following Hendrick Doncker IIs tenure, reflecting the consolidation of Amsterdams hydrographic publishing industry under van Keulen in the early 1700s.nDoncker IIs map, while rooted in the precision of his fathers methods, reflects the evolving needs of VOC navigation and trade, and stands as one of the last independently published charts of Java before van Keulens dominance in Dutch maritime cartography.
